The National and University Library has prepared a publication of the Bibliography of Vignettes and Trailers by Miki Muster for the 100th anniversary of the birth of the comic book master, Do You Draw Miki Muster?, in conjunction with the major exhibition on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the birth of the comic book master, A vi rišete Miki Muster?. The illustrated bibliography by authors Rok Glavan and Sam Kristan provides an overview of trailers and cover vignettes for comics and picture books by Miki Muster that were published in newspaper banners. The monograph represents that part of Muster’s creativity that remained hidden behind the characters themselves and their stories in comics.
The Bibliography of Vignettes and Trailers by Miki Muster will be presented on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, at 12:00, in the NUK meeting room (first floor). After the presentation, the authors will take you through the exhibition Do You Draw Miki Muster?
The Bibliography of Vignettes and Trailers by Miki Muster includes a list of vignettes and trailers for comics and picture books by Miki Muster. The authors limited the selection to the first publications of the comics that appeared in Slovenian newspapers between 1952 and 1973, namely in Poletova podobe in povesti (1952), Petkova Panorama (1953), Tedenska Tribuna (1953–1968), Slovenski Poročevalec (1954–1959), Delo (1959–1960) and Ljubljanski Dnevnik (1960–1961). The bibliography consists of a pictorial and descriptive part and is arranged chronologically, so that individual units follow each other by date of publication or, in the case of sub-pages, by the date of publication of the first part of the comic.
Rok Glavan, co-author of the Bibliography, in the preface describes the role of Mustra’s trailers as unique visual prequels to upcoming comic adventures, adding that in addition to these, he also created cover vignettes for these comics and picture books, “where each vignette was a wonderful miniature work of art, combining humor, dynamics, and character characterization.” These trailers and cover vignettes are artistic gems that accompany the publication of Mustra’s comics and reveal his mastery of smaller formats. Therefore, the present bibliography is not just a list, but also “a tribute to Mustra’s ability to breathe life and story into every detail.”
The bibliography consists of 160 units, 70 of which are entirely written by Miki Muster himself, and 90 of which are drawings for stories by other authors. Among Muster’s comics, the most recognizable are Zvitorepčeve prigode, followed by Jakec and Ali Aga and Trebuško plahun in njegova družina; among the illustrations he used to furnish stories by other authors, we find Doživljaji mala Lupinice, Čebelica Maja, Poslednji Mohikanec, Kazan, Medvedek Neewa, Tivolski junaki and, for example, Sienkiewitz’s Skozi pustinje in puščave.
Miki Muster, who was born on November 22, 1925 in Murska Sobota, was a master with a pencil, an academic sculptor by education, but an illustrator and animator by heart. He found his true expression in drawing. Between 1952 and 1973, he created more than forty episodes about the fox Zvitorepec, the turtle Trdonja and the wolf Lakotnik, a total of more than 5,000 comic strips. In addition, he created a series of picture books for children, including Medvedka Neewa, Snežka, Lupinica, Kazana … illustrated books about nature and sports, designed covers, posters and textbooks and was a pioneer in the field of animation. With his work, he combined playfulness and wisdom, and with his characters he has become imprinted in the common memory of many generations.
The entire opus of Muster’s creativity is extremely rich, and in it we also find these miniature works of art, to which Miki Muster devoted the same attention as to his longer creations. Therefore, the present bibliography is another, albeit small, very indispensable stone in understanding the creative mosaic of the legendary master of Slovenian comics and animation.
The bibliography of Miki Muster’s vignettes and trailers is being presented to readers in conjunction with the current exhibition “Do you draw Miki Muster?” at the National and University Library. With it, NUK joins the event marking the 100th anniversary of the birth of the popular creator of Slovenian comics and animation. The exhibition features material from the rich collections of NUK and a donation from Ciril Gale, publisher and expert on Muster’s work. You can admire Muster’s comic classics Zvitorepec, Trdonja and Lakotnik, as well as rare publications, book illustrations and original drawings that reveal the author’s mastery, creative breadth and dedication to drawing. The authors of the bibliography and the exhibition are Rok Glavan and Samo Kristan.
